AK Treatment:

Actinic Keratosis: What To Do After Treatment

Most cases of AKs can be treated and cured. However, the fact that actinic keratosis has developed suggests that the skin has taken a large amount of accumulated sun damage over the years. While the AK treatments are effective in removing the AK lesions, it unfortunately does not remove or reverse the sun damage that the skin has accumulated.

People with AK lesions are statistically far more likely to develop more AKs as well as other skin cancers. The reason is likely to do with the total amount of sun damage that the skin has already taken, as well as any other disposition that would make the development of these malignancies more likely.

We have two recommendations:

  • Keep yourself well protected from the sun. The development of AK lesions are evidence that the skin has taken too much sun damage, and is at risk of developing further malignancies such as AK or skin cancer. It is imperative that you protect your skin at this point as the dangers are here.
  • Periodically visit a dermatologist to do a quick check-up. Understand that you are likely at a higher risk of developing AKs or skin cancer in the future.

Both of these measures will protect you from further sun damage, and potential trouble with skin malignancies.

Prevention of Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis can be thought of as a symptom of overexposure to the sun over the years. As such, prevention is simple-stay away from sunlight, and use proper protection such as hats and sunscreens-but the precaution must be ongoing. Here are some suggested lifestyle adjustments that are recommended:

  • Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun-beaches, outside exposure
  • Using proper sun protection-Broad spectrum sunscreens, hats, sunglasses, long sleeved shirts
  • Minimizing sun exposure when the UV levels are at its peak: 10AM - 3PM.
